Good evening. I just wanted to share my frustration as a teacher with certain websites being blocked by a school district. I teach environmental science at the High school level and my students and I have been focused in on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. My brother-in-law is part of the air force that is dropping chemicals on the oil spill to help clean it up. This is the first time in history this has been done and I would love to have him talk with my students about it. The problem is he probably won't be home until school is out. I would love to be able to use Skype and have him explain to the students exactly what he is doing but Skype is blocked by our school district. Arg!!!! If Skype was blocked by your school district and you were able to get it unblocked I would love to hear how you did it.

ReplyDeleteAt our school and I also teach at a high school that several things are blocked, like you tube for example. There are times when I want to unblock it so I can show the students a video of a project being made and the way I get it unblocked is I have to contact the technology director and give him the number of my computer and the website I want unblocked. He then will unblock my computer for a couple of days and I can show what ever it is I need to show. The technology director at your school could probably do the same thing for you if you knew what day you needed to skype or you could do one of the voice threads and have your brother in law do a video and the kids could comment on it. It would be good if they could ask him questions and stuff on the spot though. Hope this helps. Karen

ReplyDeleteI seems to be the norm to contact whoever is incharge of the internet in your district and delvelop some repoire with them. They can then let you know what they can do for you, but it seems to be entirely up to that one individual's discretion. Good luck and let us know how it works out. I am also fighting the same battle.
